Is there nothing a smartphone won't do? First smartphones replaced PDAs, then it was music players and digital cameras. Now smartphones are not only connecting to cars but also poised to deliver new functions to drivers.

Mercedes-Benz was one of the first to allow drivers to directly link their smart phones to their vehicles. Based on its mbrace system, which has OnStar-like features such as automatic collision notification and emergency calls for serious accidents, what's different about the Mercedes system is that it includes apps for the iPhone and BlackBerry. The first one from Mercedes allows owners to lock or unlock a vehicle remotely, and I do mean remotely. 

By using the phone's online connection, for example, one can tap a BlackBerry in New York to unlock a Mercedes in Washington, D.C. Also available is an app that will automatically find your car in a crowded parking lot and give you directions. (The first six months of mbrace service are free for new-car buyers. After that, it’s $280 a year for the basic service.)
