Car hire insurance: new website offers help comparing cover The Guardian

Holidaymakers who have been hit by unexpected car hire insurance costs could save money via a new website launched yesterday.

Moneymaxim.co.uk is the first website to let consumers find the best price for a policy known as 'collision damage waiver', which provides an alternative to the additional, often pricey, insurance offered by car hire companies.

This excess insurance is popular with drivers because the compulsory insurance provided by the car hire companies is poor and would leave them with a big bill to pay in the event of any damage to the vehicle.

However, even collision damage waiver, or 'super cover', is typically not fully comprehensive, leaving drivers uninsured for damage to wheels, windscreen, tyres and the undercarriage of the vehicle and often with a small excess still to pay. It can also be very expensive. The new site allows drivers to compare what cover they are actually getting from different independent providers.

Standalone car hire insurance policies that cover this excess have been around since 2002, but the market has burgeoned over the past eight years with the latest company, icarhireinsurance , launching its product last month.
