With major insurers forecasting double-digit premium increases this year, it's a good time to review your vehicle insurance when it is due, rather than just blindly paying the renewal fee. Research company RateCity looked at comprehensive car insurance premiums for the same driver profile for three different locations in Sydney and Melbourne last December and found quotes varied by as much as $650 in Melbourne and $800 in Sydney. So shopping around could save hundreds of dollars.
The chief executive of RateCity, Damian Smith, said Suncorp Metway and Insurance Australia Group, which comprise about three quarters of the market, are often uncompetitive on cost but don't provide online price comparisons. However, you can do a quick check on whether your policy is competitive, through websites such as ratecity.com.au.
